Constraints in the development of Architecture

“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” -quoted Frank Gehry, one of the greatest architects in the world.

I am going to discuss certain issues related to architecture, which can be changed if we try to understand the hindrance in the path of architecture and eliminate it accordingly. Let us cover a few pointers in a nutshell.

Architecture needs to evolve more on the basis of functionality as compared to aesthetics.

History has already proved that what remains in the past can never be reversed. An architect must be sensitive to the spaces he or she builds as it creates a particular experience for the inhabitants and determines whether that person or a group of people will make use of the space or not. We must understand that population plays an important role now, so we cannot simply design a space merely for the purpose of complexity without functionality. In fact , the future will require us to vertically expand spaces as horizontal expansion will not work for heavy population.

One of the most beautiful examples is the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, built by Ar. Charles Correa. Different spaces have all been put to use as a library, exhibition halls and even the cafeteria.

Global pandemic has affected lifestyle and architecture in several cases.

In the 14th Century, The Black Plague lead to the eradication of 30% of the population in Europe, crippling the socio-economic infrastructure and causing a change in the way people communicated. A similar situation took place in Paris after the tuberculosis outbreak. People began to look for urban sanitation by incorporating spaces bringing in more light and ventilation.

Today, we experience another Global pandemic-The Covid-19,as it will be remembered, is different altogether and it will change our perspective of space. People will wish for their work spaces to be linked to their home. There might be temperature controlled spaces taking shape. Light and ventilation will come into the picture. We will have more protective spaces.

Sometimes protective spaces might isolate people completely.

The future will urge us to create inclusive spaces as interaction between people may deteriorate. Inclusive spaces will play a major role here. Another concept will develop further where we will have lots of High-rise buildings with a tinge of Biomimetic architecture. Sustainable Architecture will also continue to evolve in new horizons. Thus, architecture will orient itself into different levels of functionality and beauty along with the ecosystem till eternity.
